Ptolemy's Mountains of the Moon — a glaciated range rising to Margherita Peak at 5,109m, the third-highest point in Africa. The climb passes through vegetation zones found almost nowhere else: bamboo, then a surreal Afro-alpine belt of giant lobelia and tree groundsel taller than a person, then rock, snow and ice on the equator. The full summit circuit takes eight to nine days and demands real mountain fitness.

The highest point in Africa at 5,895m and the tallest free-standing mountain on earth — a walkable summit that needs no technical climbing, only time, patience and respect for the altitude. The Machame and Lemosho routes give the best acclimatisation and the best scenery, climbing through rainforest, moorland and alpine desert to the Roof of Africa. Summit night starts around midnight and finishes on the crater rim at sunrise.
